A minimum of thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
