Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a thrilling plot showcasing divine entities, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the premier party of adventurers who will separate from the main group to undertake their independent quest, separate from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven narrative style where peaceful solutions are rare.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 show why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party knows exactly where to head next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the story’s plot—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their position as important members in the influential clan could enable the team reach locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that control the city for a multiple motives, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The healer betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This results in them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

Based on the latest episode’s follow-up content, we find out that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Seekers and Planners groups.

Viewers can look forward to learning which players will be where in the story’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
