'Did It Not Captivate?' Why a Shortened Test Was No Less a Genuine Test Match.

Within a glass case on the elevated floor of the Melbourne Cricket Ground is housed a neon pink suit worn by the entertainer. The concert in front of 100,024 spectators was considered a triumph.

It's possible you appreciate Robbie Williams. You might think he is the finest offering to music the world has ever seen. Or you could adopt a reasonable stance, conceding that some tracks are excellent while others are poor.

The key argument is that amusement can be delivered diversely. You like what you like. There is no one way to craft music or even five-day cricket.

The Unrivalled Depth of The Test Format

The five-day game boasts incomparable variety. One struggles to think of another sport where the playing is so dictated by the environment.

The climate, the time of day, the red ball – the list is endless. Crucially is the pitch.

If Test cricket is a form of art, the pitch is the foundation on which the cricketers craft their legacy.

An Abstract Contest: The Melbourne Spectacle

The fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England was the game deconstructed, the traditional sport taken to pieces and stuck back together in abstract form.

This is not a justification of the wicket which resulted in a win and the another short match of the series.

Having 10mm of grass on the surface, resulting in numerous dismissals tumbling in less than a brief period, is not a fair contest between offense and defense.

A Diverse Legacy: The Essence of Test Cricket

But any notion this was a diminished spectacle, one that should be qualified as illegitimate, is incorrect.

Test cricket is a diverse canvas, a long history and still growing. On occasion, as witnessed recently, the ball moves excessively for the fast men. In contrast, it grips and turns on a spinning track. At other venues, the pitch is dead, other times it explodes.

The close matches are even more exciting due to the investment committed during quieter periods.

Problem Solving: The Core Skill

Some factors are accepted more freely than others.

The debate in at the MCG was that the contest was weighted unfairly towards the fielding side. That the top batters were prevented from showcasing their talents.

Test cricket is about finding solutions – assessing the situation and adapting effectively. The best individual contributions were made by world-class stars. One team made more mistakes than the other, and thus were defeated.

Unbridled Joy: The Fan Perspective

Attempt to convince the fans who have experienced a long drought that this lacked spectacle.

Among the crowd of the ground, a sea of people waved their flags and created an atmosphere, producing a festive mood in a heartland of Australian cricket.

There was hope as the fielding side excelled, impetus when the top order fought back, and rapturous celebration when the win was confirmed.

Polar Opposites: The Spectrum of Test Matches

The Melbourne has previous experience with pitch problems. In the past, a match there featured a wicket with the character of a pulled Christmas cracker.

That contest was a slog, with few wickets and endless boredom. The latest encounter and that previous match are polar opposites of the range – neither ideal, yet value can be attached to them.

At this stage into the current series, it is the two-day matches that will live longest in the history books.

"It's not the demise of the format at all," commented a former player. "The people who have been lucky enough to see these 48 hours have been given some genuine drama. A unique show."

Baby Steps: Building for the Future

In the build-up to this Test, the leader talked like a man carrying the weight of the world on his back.

The team responded for him, restoring the smile to his countenance.

Different players stepped up with crucial roles. These are baby steps, not nearly enough to guarantee long-term futures, but something to build on.

At the very least, this MCG win is added to other memorable performances in similar circumstances.

As the fans departed into a stunning sunset, the squad gathered on the turf to begin their own enjoyment.

Enjoy the drink, men. It's well deserved.
