The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
