Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
