Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
