Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
